Modern Spongebob Squarepants episodes (post-Season 9) seem more like the Adult Party Cartoons of The Ren & Stimpy Show to me, certainly given the off-model expressions & animation quality. Fred Osmond worked on this episode of Spongebob and he did this lovely pose from Altruists

Over 5 years ago I tried to draw some of Ren Höek's reactions in "Svën Höek" from my VHS of Ren & Stimpy Classics II (1994). All by freeze framing, then drawing them with little construction if any.
