Something important to note is that when I choose the color of the light source, I also employ a slightly desaturated/lightened version of that color and use it to fill in anything that's meant to be pure white, such as this guy's tunic. Here's other more "bright white" tunics:

Following that, I lay down rough swathes of color and decide the color of the light source. The color of the light source is the single most important decision I will make in this process. I've always imagined this scene having very red walls, so I went with that
