Supposedly the story was Sega was reviewing their own IP after the failures with their own games like 06, the Wii titles and such... and they happened across this cover of the comics which they felt was extremely out of character for Sonic

Considering how extremely rare the characters are officially seen barefoot over the years, in the few times they are, their feet have always looked inconsistent
