MAÎTRESSE (1975)
Dir: Barbet Schroeder
DP: Néstor Almendros
Music: Carlos d'Alessio
A thief finds himself the lover of a professional dominatrix in striking study of kinks & human sexuality. A part of so many cult genre films, stripped of the glamour of such pictures. #drama
LOG TIME!
So this month was weird, but I guess I watched more than I expected.
How'd you guys do?
The moments when great composers get even greater, and with a different medium no less. #animation
Goldsmith: THE SECRET OF NIMH
Bernstein: HEAVY METAL
Ifukube: THE LITTLE PRINCE & THE EIGHT-HEADED DRAGON
Rosenman: THE LORD OF THE RINGS
Another literal voyage into #ClassicalMusic with the turbulent, breathtaking cantata "Moby Dick" by an icon of American music, Bernard Herrmann, that matches the larger-than-life nature of the tale.
Painting: "Fishing Boats with Hucksters Bargaining for Fish" by J.M.W. Turner
OBSESSION (1976)
Dir: Brian De Palma
DP: Vilmos Zsigmond
Music: Bernard Herrmann
De Palma's VERTIGO, & by God was it rivetting. Breathtaking, heartbreaking, poetic, suspenseful, & ingenious. I absolutely adore the locales, the imagery, & that sweet, beautiful music! #mystery
I've never been one for hot takes but:
Jerry Goldsmith's STAR TREK > John Williams's STAR WARS (literally every score).
Not saying Williams's music is bad (in fact it's brilliant), but Goldsmith hit this out of the park & into the heavens! #NowListening

HEDGEHOG IN THE FOG (1975)
Dir: Yuri Norstein
DP: Nadezhda Treschyova
Music: Mikhail Meyerovich
Poetry. In. Motion. A strange journey through a foggy pastoral landscape. Norstein is forever a master of animation thanks to his beautiful sense of texture & coloring. #shortfilm
#ValLewton Presents:
THE 7TH VICTIM (1943)
Dir: Mark Robson
DP: Nicholas Musuraca
Music: Roy Webb
When a young girl goes searching for her missing sister, she begins to uncover something unholy. A briskly paced, beautifully shot fusion of #noir style & occult themes. #mystery
As another aside, watching Jean Rollin's NIGHT OF THE HUNTED a few weeks back also gave me these vibes. I don't know why. Perhaps it's just similarities: dreamlike nature, psychological underpinnings, & gloomy imagery.
THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTED (1980) / SILENT HILL 2 (2001) #horror
REBECCA (1940)
Dir: Alfred Hitchcock
DP: George Barnes
Music: Franz Waxman
Perfection, Rebecca is thy name. A gothic tale of a young woman living in the shadow of a widower's 1st wife. Fontaine, Anderson, & Olivier stun in this lovely film from the Master of Suspense. #mystery
