I feel like the anime really does work to fill in Mai's backstory a lot more than Takahashi did. I'd assume he at least gave the okay on some of this, even if it isn't "canon" to his take. Just is intriguing.

Mai vs Marik continues, and while I still think this reeeaaally dumbs down Yami Marik's entire violent taunting self compared to the manga, it's still making for a great spotlight on why Mai rules, all while sprinkling in more fanservice for the best OTP.

I feel split. Dark Marik is all about violence, which simply wouldn't fly on TV w their target audience. While we lose some great body horror and one of the most brutal sections in YGO, we still get that same desperation and terror out of it with psychological horror. Kinda.

The staff TRIES to make Dark Marik as creepy as in the manga, but the effect just doesn't carry over well.

So this duel has Jonouchi spamming Fire Ball again and again to damage Yugi.

It's almost like Takahashi was preparing for his career for the next 10 years.

Kept wondering why Mask of Darkness sounded so familiar to me.
I saw it was Koji Ishii the other day, but something about that booming voice stumped me on where I'd heard it until I thought.. "..ファイナルフュージョン、承認!!" AND THEN IT HIT ME.
