Another new art discovery from Detroit:
THE HERO, 1960
Artist: Leroy Foster, American, 1925-1993
He was called Detroit's Michelangelo for his understanding of anatomy but what I love most about THE HERO is the confident gaze that exudes dignity.

Every time I write off John Singer Sargent for being all about superficial drapery and sleeping with his subjects, I come across a painting of his like this...THE MOSQUITO NETS (1908) at has wispy visible brushstrokes making the image seem very spontaneous.

What I love about the photographic medium is the way that a photograph can take something
very ephemeral, very temporary and transgress that temporality. Photography freezes otherwise soon forgotten moments of life as well as movements of the body
in ways our brains cannot.

The residue of surface touch
records our lives; the subjects pictured beneath
them record our culture. The prints, smears, and
stains are not just grime, but rather evidence of
flitting attention, a map of how we spend our time.
