His only appearance in the og manga is a panel in Freeza arc as a homage to Toei's special. But it has zero impact on the actual story. Freeza does not even remember his name and Goku does not care to know about him. Removing it does not cause any harm to the narrative of the arc

Vegeta's hunt for the Dragon Balls is a direct contrast to Goku's hunt for Dragon Balls in pilaf and RRA arc. Interestingly, both started their journey with a 4 star Dragon Ball.
Fast forward to Namek/Freeza arc, once again the contrast between Goku and Vegeta's methodology to get stronger is showcased. Vegeta only relies on Saiyan biological ability of getting stronger after near death, while Goku relies mainly on acquired training
