A former GI, Christine Jorgensen is remembered as perhaps the first trans media sensation – she was well received by the tabloid press when she publicly came out in 1952.
Alan L Hart underwent medical transition in 1917, pursuing a successful scientific career at the same time. Hart developed pioneering X-ray systems to detect tuberculosis, which went on to save countless lives!
Lucy Hicks Anderson always knew she was a girl, and lived as a girl from a young age with the support of her parents. She was later accused of lying about her gender on a marriage licence. This, and other cases like it, paved the way for legal change.
As one of the first people to achieve a legal change of gender, Karl M Baer was utterly pivotal in history. Baer worked closely with Dr Magnus Hirschfeld to develop Hirschfeld’s understanding of the trans experience.
