Snapshots of watercolours of Iraqi plants I've been working on this month. The detail they require can at times be tormenting and the journey to completion can be tough! But I appreciate all the kind words you've given me along the way.

Watercolours of a dahlia anemone and a sea urchin shell ('test'). Both show radial symmetry: by turning a given section, it rotates above 0° and under 360° to a near-exact match of the next section. Each creature is beautifully unique.

My watercolour of a prickly pear cactus (Opuntia dillenii) just completed.

Work in progress. I always enjoy painting leaves that are past their best, because they have so much personality.

A pencil sketch I've just completed of vegetation survey work carried out with local botanists (on the car bonnet!) in the forests of Hokkaido, 2017.

Illustrations I've just completed inspired by my encounters with parasitic 'vampire' plants, that lack chlorophyll, and steal food from the roots of other plants. One is Hydnora africana in the Little Karoo, South Africa; the other is Phacellanthus tubiflorus in Hokkaido, Japan.

A series of oil paintings of bee orchids I've just completed. These extraordinary flowers mimic female insects, fooling 'real' males into trying to mate with them, bringing about their pollination.
