Incantation bowls were buried upside-down at the entrances of homes in Mesopotamia,so as to trap demons who tried to enter the house. This 7th century bowl with Aramaic inscription was prepared to protect Abuna bar Geribta and Ibba bar Zawithai from a series of evil forces.

The oldest known depiction of the Trojan Horse can be found on the so-called Mykonos vase, c. 670 BC. The neck of the pithos shows the descent of the Greeks from the wooden horse. His hooves rest upon little wheels, and in the body and neck of the horse are seven windows visible.

In Petronius' satirical novel, the Satyricon (A.D. 60s), Trimalchio recited a poem to the effect that life was short and should be enjoyed before becoming a skeleton like the one he displayed. This lovely Roman miniature bronze skeleton may have been used in the same manner.
