Jack Cole's "The Death of Midnight" (Smash Comics #36) sees the titular hero, an early Spirit knockoff, dies! and as he reaches the pearly gates he asks St. Peter to send him down - because he wants a crack at Satan... only to discover the real power behind the demonic throne.
