Glimpses from this morning’s very jolly tour from Campo de’ Fiori via the former Ghetto and across the river to Trastevere.
Glimpses of the Vatican Museums this afternoon. The emptiest I’ve seen it in normal hours in the 19 years I’ve been giving tours here. An amazing opportunity for anyone in Rome!
Yesterday evening I was invited by a pal who works for the Vatican to an after-hours visit to the Sistine Chapel to see the Raphael tapstries in situ. This time I was allowed to take photos. It was incredible. More on my Instagram stories: @understandingrome
It’s also home to perhaps the best sculpture ever made. https://t.co/QIVLdEwjc5
The volcanic exhibition at @Scuderie is brilliant. Full of amazing pieces, beautifully curated, and extremely moving. Highly recommended.
Today is the feast of Santa Francesca Romana, a Roman aristocrat who took holy orders after she was widowed. Her convent at Tor de’ Specchi is decorated with frescoes detailing her life by Antoniazzo Romano and is open to the public on 9th March each year.
Last day to see Bernini show at Borghese is Tues 20th (special opening on Mon 19th, closed Wed 21st instead). Highly recommended, it’s a beautifully curated exhibition which integrates pieces with permanent collection.
Bronzes of Riace are among most beautifully moving things I've ever seen. I can't believe it took me this long. They are c.2500 years old.
And this show was on, which made me feel at home! Small ace shows are the best. End of @MorganLibrary ad 😉
