@OskSta I start with a Delaunay triangulation of a set of random points - a regular triangular grid produces too regular quads for my needs:) Then as you described I merge random pairs of triangles into quads. Then I fix certain defects (colored curves on the first and second images)...
Revisiting the idea of curved alleys, this time on a quadrilateral mesh
Here is a comparison with a more complex (and unrealistic) shape. The new algorithm performs better, but still far from perfect. Not sure what would be "perfect" in this example, maybe there should just one row of lots at the top left end of the block.
Gradients look better than plain colours, but not 'cartographically" enough...
