The closest I got to photographing the starry-sky-patterned young yellowtail damselfish zipping in and out of this coral head. The waves kept lifting and dropping me, and I worried they’d drop me onto, uh, another animal in this photo. But the fish really were this starlike.
The trumpetfish life strategy is to hover upside down, giving off your best “I AM A TUBULAR SPONGE, PAY ME NO MIND” vibes. When a little fish gets too close, you do something indescribable, possibly unspeakable, with your long mouth, and the little fish becomes your snack.
