240 years ago today off the Yorkshire coast, @USNavy demigod #JohnPaulJones in his converted merchant frigate Bonhomme Richard defeated British HMS Serapis in a crazy, plucky, uphill, Horatio Hornblower-esque battle. By coincidence, we visited the old boy at @USNAMuseum yesterday

An all-but-unknown N.C. Wyeth, "Spring" (1901), hanging at the Brandywine @BranRiverMuseum in Pa. Not a commissioned illustration, this was a private wedding gift to one of Wyeth's students.
