Hundreds of millions about to welcome in 2023 with a big dose of the climate crisis. Get ready to read about some astonishing temperatures
Forecast for the Arctic in a weeks' time. A massive heat blob of up to 20C above average sitting at the top of the world.
After the sharp heat up and then cool down across Europe this week, GFS is spotting ANOTHER burst of anomalous heat for Western Europe for early September. Is anyone surprised?
A week out and 3 of 4 GFS model runs still want extreme 40C+ for the UK next weekend. All 4 model runs locking France, Belgium, Netherlands in to seriously extreme heat that looks likely to break records. Hottest day in recorded history for these countries can't be ruled out
First significant European heat event incoming? Models in good agreement that a high pressure system from the Atlantic will bring temps 12-16C above average and to 30C+ for Portugal, Spain and possibly France next week.
A weakened jet stream will drag cold air across Europe and deep into the Mediterranean, pushing temps 20C below average in places. Next week we'll be reading again about significant crop damage and loss to fruit and grape harvests. We will also read the words "climate change?"
Massive heat anomalies at both polar regions is the sort of thing you might expect to see on a planet undergoing a fundamental shift in its climate state
For a week the northern hemisphere has been >2C above average, at times close to 3C. Big heat anomalies in the Arctic, Africa to the Middle East, US Midwest. The cold blob south of Greenland threatening to shut down Atlantic circulation. The warning signs couldn't be clearer
For a few days now the GFS forecast model has been spitting out 50C temperatures for Argentina this week centered around the Cordoba region. Buenos Aires itself looks set for 45C+. Just a huge expanse of terrible heat on the way.
