WIP Wednesday! The bee Perdita multiflorae is entirely yellow, but there is a hidden rainbow of color in the wings🐝🐝🔬🐝🐝 https://t.co/xtoAqohHUc
Perdita (Pseudomacrotera) turgiceps — one of the more odd species of Perdita. Males show a lot of variation in size and coloration, plus they have a weird tooth on the mandibles. Here are two males on opposite ends of the spectrum: big + brown and small + blue.
It's WIP Wednesday! Here is the wing of the bee Perdita vesca as it's normally seen and then with a polarized lens.
Did you know that many bees (and other insects) have vivid and stable color patterns hidden in their wings? These "wing interference patterns" can be seen against a dark background or with a special lens.
Here is a wing under normal light, and then viewed with a polarized lens.
