Ya know what's just as bad to me as unnecessary change?
It's when the series doesn't take any risks with tone or character design and just embraces one aspect of their appeal.
I like to call it "Mascot Syndrome"
These are the games are pretty much my gold-standard for sequels. Take what was good about the first game, and simply do more of that.
