Toon shaders and outlines work well with the old model as well. I really just think they need to down the intensity on both of them in game

Although I am a fan of the new textures, I do agree that it seems to be for corner cutting. However, the new models do feature their own shading on their texture sheets still.
(Flat lighting in viewport).
