漫画版では、その解釈は大きく変わり、ジャブローの建設現場に潜入していたシャアが、カジノで能力を利用されていたララァと出会い救い出した。という話になっていました。過去編なので一年戦争よりもずっと前の話です。

どうして、そんな場所へ行って、才能を発掘できたのかは少々疑問ですが、冨野監督としては「アニメは子供も見るから台詞では説明しませんが、匂わせることで分かる人には伝わるだろう」という意図があったそうです。

冨野監督の原作によると、左遷されて各地を転々としていたシャアは、インドの娼館でララァと出会い、ニュータイプの素質を見いだしたとされています。

第34話『宿命の出会い』では、ララァは「私のような女を拾ってくださった…」という言い方をしますが、実はこの言葉の裏には、かつてララァが娼婦だったという意味が含まれています。
