It's Saturday 2 October 1819. Forty-seven days after the Peterloo massacre, the Lees inquest in Oldham has resumed. The coroner has angrily reacted to newspapers reporting the evidence, against his instructions not to, until the case - and any follow-up legal action - is over.
Queen Victoria's beloved Prince Albert, who was also her first cousin, was born on this day in 1819. (I never used to understand why people thought he was so handsome but I totally get it now.)

French Realist Gustave Courbet was #BornOnThisDay 1819. His scandalous Le Somneil 1866 bears an intriguing resemblance to Rossetti's illustration for Goblin Market 1862. Possible 'Sleep' model Joanna Hiffernan was also painted by Courbet in 1855-6 predating Rossetti's Lady Lilith

John Rennie's Southwark Bridge opened #onthisday 1819. Originally called Queen Street bridge, the centre span was said to be the longest cast iron span ever built, at 240ft (73m). It was replaced in 1921 as it was too narrow to cope with the growing traffic.
