The aim was to create something with a simple silhouette. I pitched a ball with legs. The 3 main influences were the flu virus, a lamprey mouth and a dog’s squeaky ball toy…you can see the ball texture in a later concept. These are the refs I used from back then ⬇️

Agreed. The reason why TF2’s cast is so recognizable is that their designs are simple enough that you can recognize the characters even when they have a silhouette.
