The Brown Pelican has a long history as a symbol of conservation. In 1903, Pres. Teddy Roosevelt set aside Florida’s Pelican Island to be the first National Wildlife Refuge to protect them from hunters. The Brown Pelican was made the state bird of Louisiana in 1966
