What I really don't get is that people point to 16 bit video games as true pixel art (which according to them is simple and has fewer pixels) even though that most of the backgrounds back then were also incredibly detailed

A quality comparison between the Japanese TMM DVD and Blu-ray. Even though both are in 480i SD format, the Blu-ray quality is significantly better with the picture being brighter with a lot less noise (pixels), without losing the finer details.
