"A cold-blooded creature in every sense. It possesses sharp fan-like wings and ear plumage which it brings to bear on foes who stray too close."

Richard has over 30 years of illustration experience, including field-sketching.

: "I enjoy the immediacy of working directly from nature, trying to capture the life & vitality of wild birds, & the patterns of plumage, light, water & foliage."

My basic rate for illustrations is $25 (USD) an hour. Most individual drawings will be in the $75-$150 range, depending on complexity, but getting multiple variations of colors/plumage/etc in the same pose only adds a little bit to the price, as it's fairly easy to do.

This one is coming along, still lots of plumage & background elements to draw in, so just a close up of the layers I’ve actually finished for now

Did you know? Female Blackbirds are brown and speckled. Helen Welsh captures this confusing plumage with delicate brushstrokes and subtle hues.

These birds are always ready for the weekend! This week we are featuring some of the more colorful plumage from our 1974 folio facsimile set of English naturalist Mark Catesby’s 'Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands.' Learn more: https://t.co/t9zdGd9jB6

Like the flowers from which the dragons are named, an orchid dragon begins its life in a humble shape, “blooming” into its fantastical plumage with age. Elder orchid dragons are astonishingly beautiful creatures, with their scales prized for both their majesty and durability.

Yutyrannus is the largest dinosaur with direct evidence of plumage found so far. It lived in a much ealier time and in a more chillier place than rex did. I like this art by Gabriel Ugueto bc it shows that tyrannosaroidea had those hairy puppet fibers.

The Willow Ptarmigan has an enormous range, spanning from the British Isles to Russia, to Alaska to Quebec. They are known for their seasonal plumage, changing from white in winter to a marbled brown in summer. The Willow Ptarmigan was made the state bird of Alaska in 1960

A selection of symbiotic fungii and their partner bird species. Note the dappling along the stalks and caps matches the partner's plumage. The birds seem to benefit from this relationship by coating their nests with potent scent that repels predators.

Sinosauropteryx is our first compsognathid and probably best known for being the first non-avian dinosaur described with feathers. It's a quite cute, slender creature that is so well known that even the stripy pattern in it's plumage is preserved.

Shit times. Thus, have some raptors in modern bird plumage for distraction.

I love Tawny Frogmouths, seriously, they always seem like they are not impressed with a joke that everyone else thinks is funny (or that they just don’t want to be at ‘the party’). With their soft plumage & huge eyes, they are stunning camouflage experts

Another Dyar portrait of a feathered Wynne, 1932. Designer Travis Banton used a similar plumage design in gowns for Marlene Dietrich in Shanghai Express (1932) and Louise in The Canary Murder Case (1929) (R):

There are several closely-related "blue wren" (Malurus) species, including this one. Only males in breeding plumage are bright blue; the extent and distribution of blue varies with the species. Lovely artwork by https://t.co/EcblcWcTWt
