Hello, I had a question--I tried your wonderful smudge tutorial a while ago, but recently when smudging clouds, a dark color now emerges from heavy smudges. Have you ever encountered this problem? Any advice? I haven't altered the brushes at all beyond your guide.

A tip.. use natural media brushes like the default 'Soft Pastel', and blend with a fingerprint brush for smudging by touch (I use brushes from MattyB on https://t.co/z9yVTmRk63) to achieve some nice texture!

I do a LOT in the rough stages and it still looks terrible, because this is the base of the final painting. Then I did a separate layer of smudging for my warp effect; I penciled a rough outline of where smoke should go, then smudged it around (sample all layers).

Old ref for comparison! My main goals were to make the face less flat and to find a different approach to suit shininess. I also ended up streamlining a couple things. Overall this coloring is heavier on gradients and lighter on painting, smudging and reflections/lens flare.

'Harbour Shallows'.
The blacks on this piece are ground charcoals found in Parc Le Breos ancient forest. The sky is made from smudging sage- still holding a beautifully, herbal aroma.
'Harbour Shallows' is a dramatic coastal original that really does ooze that earthy energy.

The color scheme of SG Prowl, SG Animated Prowl and Jazz provided by seems to have been done in a way to make it look "evil", such as replacing white with black to increase the area, or smudging white to add purple or dark red.
