1885年のこの日、現在の特許法の前身である専売特許条例が公布され、日本の特許制度が始まった。これを記念し、1954年に通商産業省（現・経済産業省）がこの日を「発明の日」と定めた。特許権や商標権などの産業財産権制度の普及と啓発を図ることが目的。
