I always start with a 2D walk cycle. Once I get the animation I like I use the camera trick with layer style stroke to get my isometric angle right (or any angle). After that it's all about getting the details right (frame by frame).

I'd say that CG anime can look jarring when they try to make it fit in a 2D situation, however, if CG is the entire workflow of the animation, it will work significantly better. I think people are concerned about the fact that the new DB movie will look like the bizarre anime CG.

A quick draw/paint over for a 3d model I'm currently working on. It can take a while for a sculpt to come together so I find it's useful to work backward like this to validate if forms are in the right place. Another plus is that the test kindof stands on its own. =]
