Considering the gap between Sonic Crackers and the Knuckles' Chaotix 1207 prototype, it's theorized development for the Saturn ver. may have happened between then.

I think the idea of sprites being determined by specific objects being thrown into it is really interesting. What if you prototyped something that has multiple characters with no one main protaganist?
