Development for Mr. Driller started out as a Dig Dug sequel known aptly as Dig Dug 3. As the game grew to become its own thing, it was given a standalone identity in the form of Mr. Driller.
The Dig Dug character would eventually be part of the Mr. Driller series as Taizo Hori.
You could Say this is Merely Hori's style developing over time but i can't help but see the very "subtle" gains on ocha ~
