Okay so some coloring tests. Basically the man difference is about putting the same information in different layers, mostly the shading as ambient occlusion separate from the light source.

The original had all the parts on separate layers, so after some fiddling in Blender and CS Modeler, I ended up with a posable Zyra model!

This is going to be a lifesaver with my comic and now that I know I can do this, more models of my other character may be on the horizon!
