Grotesques were a fantastic genre of decorative arts most common in the 16th & 17th centuries. They explored a blend of animal, plant, & human forms. These elements were found in ancient Roman grottoes. Over time, the word became over-exaggerated & developed a negative meaning.

there's this upcoming game called Unexplored 2 that seems to be taking the concept to a very interesting point, it has permadeath but you can choose to play the same world again as another character in the future, and your previous actions evolve the old world further
