“Album of Prehistoric Man” (’75) also features Ruth’s paleo work, though depicting humans was never his strong point. He could draw them fine, but there is a cartoonishness about them that makes the book feel like the weak link in the series.

Both albums were combined into one volume which featured this awesome blue Smilodon on the cover.

All the Album of books also featured little Ruth-drawn vignettes alongside the text.

Many of the pictures in “Album of PA” are burned into my memory, including the bloody cave bear & my favorite brontothere image of all time.

When I think of Aepycamelus (nee Alticamelus) I think of Ruth’s lanky beast, pounding back the predators with its hammering hooves.

...“Album of Prehistoric Animals” (’74). I think this book showcases some of Ruth’s best work. While his dinosaurs are appropriately massive, they’re posed. The animals in this book are dynamic and living. (No doubt the old active mammal vs lazy reptile trope helped fuel this.)
