Progress : Gave the guy a proper rig today, added an extra texture to the blinking, and tried moving him around to see if my weight painting went haywire

Yes! is very easy and free.
animation steps
1. Draw a portrait on slide one
2. Duplicate that slide 6 times
3. Change the sixth slide by closing the eyes
4. Export slides 1-6 as a gif
