Happy coincidence, but I even can show why I find blocking colours helpful.

Trying too hard can cause you to over focus on details, and miss the general look.
Have you tried blocking out colours before you shade, like this? I mostly do it for the undersketch for paintings, but can help as a starting point too.

Wasn’t sure how to mix 2d and 3d, hand draw or go digital. These are about 15 yrs old now and make me cringe with some of the more, interesting choices. But this was supposed to be a fun sci-fi game with big shapes. Basic blocking out was extremely helpful for working out volumes
