Ignoring my usual complaint about 3D Pokémon looking soulless, why do they desaturate the colors so much?

The sprites for shiny and regular Gengar actually look distinct in Gen 3, but on DS and 3D games they are barely noticeable & lighter.

I do this 'Draw this again' meme every few years to see how my art has changed. 2018-2019 I had a crisis over my art, feeling that it was better to draw something more soulless but 'realistic' than 'cartoony'. However thanks to some good friends I now love my cartoon style!
