This late 1980s incident shows how quickly attitudes can change. In the '70s avant garde comic riffs on religious imagery were more common, even mainstream -as in Swamp Thing (1972), where Swamp Thing is graphically martyred (by chains) on an X-form cross.

St. Januarius, Bishop of Beneventum, and his Companions

St. Januarius, his deacons, and others were beheaded at Puteoli during the persecution of Diocletian in 305. Some of the blood of St. Januarius, preserved in a phial, liquefies each year when placed near the martyrs head.

One of Mantegna’s first major jobs was working on the Ovetari Frescoes (c1450-6), which show the martyrdom of St Christopher. He completed the overall scheme & his style is apparent in the heads & the architecture depicted.

Can finally share this piece of art! A mutual of mine @/wilzyackx on IG put together a free to view zine with an occult/supernatural theme! This was the piece I created for it titled “A Martyr’s Sorrow”. The link to the zine will be in my bio!

i can't believe this is the closest the book gets to acknowledging that it was drift's choice to leave, to take the blame. how he was blinded by his own martyr complex and rushing to throw himself on any sword available.

can i get some "f"s for drift's character and personality?
