i think i've found a better way to deal with gradients with limited colors. pixel/hash brush in 3 different values, posterize into 3, and then it's easy to wand and fill just 3 colors as the aliased edges became hard pixel edges instead.

First fanart then a redraw on the right. I like adding straight/sharp lines to my drawings now and using gradients is my jam.
