On this day 1643. Lord Willoughby of Parnham captured royalist Gainsborough, as well as the Earl of Kingston & 250 royalists.
Kingston's house holds out until the next day & upon its surrender 'a great store of treasure' was taken. But within weeks, the royalists retook the town.

Ralph Hopton's royalists fight their way up the 150 foot hill.
Overnight, the parliamentarians withdraw, but Hopton is then blinded by an accidental gunpowder explosion - 'hardly so much life as not to be numbered with the dead'.

John Hampden, Civil War-era Parliamentary leader famous for his opposition to Charles I over ship money, died 1643 from wounds sustained in a skirmish with Royalists. In the early 19th c., British radicals named their debating societies ‘Hampden Clubs’ in his honour.

24 June 1643 John Hampden died of his wounds sustained days before at the Battle of Chalgrove Field. His loss was a severe blow to the Parliamentarian cause, as he was a moderating force between the various factions in Parliament.

Parliament claimed that Rupert burned 80 houses & put 'divers to the Sword'.
The royalists accepted one or two houses were burned, but insisted that Rupert ordered 'the quenching of the fire' after victory.

18 March 1643 Royalist forces under the Earl of Derby summoned Lancaster to surrender, to be rejected by the Mayor. "Enraged to see their sauciness" the Royalists plundered much of the town but were unable to capture the castle. (NPG)

In 1634 the King named himself the Cpt of the Musketeers & appointed as his Cpt-Lt the Comte de Tréville. But when the King died in 1642 & Tréville refused to hand over the reins to a nephew of Richelieu’s (d1643) successor Mazarin, the Musketeers were disbanded in 1646.
