Brooke visited Coventry from 1819 to 1820, and the album of watercolours he produced provides an important insight into Coventry's history and the development of the city centre.

Godiva is remembered for a legend in which she rode naked through the streets of Coventry to gain a remission of the taxation that her husband imposed on his tenants. In later versions of the legend, a man named Thomas watched her ride and was struck blind/dead.
