Yasuhiko was given a surprising amount of creative freedom. He remembers that the network “was becoming lax with their inspections.” Tomino insisted that the characters look like “normal people, in a normal world.” But sans that expectation, he could do what he wanted.
Ryusuke Hikawa writes, “Yasuhiko had his hand in virtually every visual pot—from essential cinematic elements such as consistency of story space and subtle atmospheric touches to promotional illustrations. Thanks to him...#Gundam came together as a cohesive whole.”
Ep. 18 of Mobile Suit #Gundam features some really striking frames of animation that highlight the physical and mental toll inflicted upon the crew of the White Base. Given that Yoshikazu Yasuhiko was animation director, this attention to visual detail isn’t surprising.

Fun fact: Mobile Suit Gundam (1979-80) influenced an untold number of creatives, including the artists at #CLAMP. In fact, Mokona is such a big fan of #Gundam—and by extension, Yoshikazu Yasuhiko—that she was asked to draw Amuro in her own style. Look familiar?

Let's talk about Bright Noa, everyone's favorite hamburger aficionado. "Role-wise, he’s the middle management type," Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, #Gundam's character designer, remarked. "So, I gave him a hairstyle imagining he’d develop a receding hairline a few years down the line.”
