Huh - I never knew this, but it appears the Pteranodon is heavily based on this art by Mineo Shiraishi.

It's quite similar, with only some of the features exaggerated to look meaner, and the colors slightly altered.

For here's of uberfamous pterosaur Pteranodon on a rock. The depicted species is Pteranodon longiceps under the generally accepted scheme of Pteranodon nomenclature, but others would class this as Pteranodon sp. 1/n
