my great great grandad, john-richard, on my grandads side of the family, fought in ww1 & he was flagbearer

my great grandad, another john but on my granny’s side fought as a private gunner in ww2 in northern italy in the mountains

May I explain a little about the Rising Sun flag?
One of the reasons why this flag is sometimes associated with WW2 is that it was used to incite anti-Japanese sentiment.
In fact, the Rising Sun flag was recognised as the victorious side in WW1 and is still officially used today.

May 17, 1912: Painter Ernest Kontratovyč is born in Kalná Roztoka 🇸🇰 († 2009). A practitioner of the Subcarpathian School of Painting, he developed his own expressionist style. During post-WW2 Soviet rule Kontratovyč managed to avoid moving to Socialist Realism.

After WW1, Arturo Nathan (1891-1944) suffered severe war trauma and he began painting on the advice of his psychiatrist. In WW2 he was labelled a prisoner of Jewish decent, by the Nazis & was deported to Biberach concentration camp in Germany where he died.
