Been trying to develop a lazy way of getting realistic lighting lately, I think the trick is to go to the extremes of dark and light within one piece, that way you can get contrast. If there’s a larger range of light in the piece, the lights look lighter and the darks look darker

Continuing - another fun option I've considered is doodle pages in pencil or pen, colored with watercolor, markers, etc. They could be bigger, too.

My take on Marisa's hair and eye colour, as well as lack of side braid : The hair was made lighter to stand out better from the background, the eyes were made red to contrast better with the new hair colour, the braid was omitted because it was too difficult to draw in this pose.

I fill the whole shape with the darkest shade of the hair and go over it with a blending brush with lighter and lighter shades in broad strokes, finish with the highlight colour with thin hairs
and add stray hairs for detail

The reason the Classic outfit is more orange-ish in Odyssey and Tour is because it has worn out over the years. In the time of Donkey Kong and Super Mario Bros, it was red. But after not being worn for years it became lighter and duller.
