The mesh is actually deceptively simple! Simplifying a shape but keeping the details and silhouette is the real difficulty. The outlines of the dome are three layers of nestled inverted shells. Each metroid is 185 tris.

it only happens when i turn off backface culling. When I do custom normals on my models, my outline mesh I use with inverted hull always ends up fucked lol. This is how it should look

oh really?? i suppose that method heavily depends on the geometry of the object then, because whenever i use it i get weird splotches at certain angles where the outline kinda just stops existing
