I think it can be done right if they don't show every angle that a typical 3D animation would. A bigger emphasis shading and linework has a giant role in this too.

Accidentally started drawing the linework on a file that was MUCH too small and had to AI upscale it. Whoops. At least I caught it really quickly. It just had to be the faces though...

Gen 8 - Again, not all Sugimori. Likely James Turner this time

The linework looks shaky again, though it appears to more digital, like with a 'noise' brush. More noticable watercolor-like splotches with the highlights and shades. Looks more rough/sloppy/grungy in certain parts.
