#onthisday 5 August 1895, Friedrich Engels died in London. Comes from burgeoise family, He is a close friend of a philosopher, Karl Marx, they form an alliance to promote communism. No tomb or public memorial for him, just his works which he passed for us, as the next generation.
I first saw this as the cover of my boyhood copy of Hesse’s Narziss and Goldmund, so it is always the abbey at Maulbronn for me. Casper David Friedrich’s Abbey Among Oak Trees from 1809, seen in person today.

Seascapes by Caspar David Friedrich (1774 – 1840). Friedrich's work brought him renown early in his career. Nevertheless, his work fell from favour during his later years, and he died in obscurity. It wasn't until the 20th Century that he was rediscovered.

What do you make of this beautiful painting, Creepy Covers? It's called 'Abbey in the Oak Forest,' by Caspar David Friedrich, 1810. Why are the monks carrying a coffin past a freshly opened grave, at night, and into the ruined church? A funeral service or something more sinister?
