What is a Metroidvania?

It's a game genre where you need a double-jump to fully enjoy the game but you start without it.

Eventually you'll find the double-jump and the sheer relief of acquiring it will make you think the game is great.

You also will double jump ALL the time.

It reminds me that I'm planning a metroidvania with a guy named Tcrakman, because there'll be a scene where the hero is crucified. The twist is that the protagonist is a monstrous demon. It will be inspired by the Amiga game Shadow of the Beast. This concept art is by Tcrakman.

I played most of the games and really love their aesthetics. This one has by far the best map design.
