While I disagree that your designs don't hit, I am still willing to give advice on how I do mine. The best I got is to make the most detailed sketch you can of a simple design, and then simplify it back down into a normal character.

Got some time to draw and so I drew a new AU and some scenarios! Basically 1010 stopped the Rock Revolution and things went bad.
