that's not to say i don't like pure spectacle! especially if the visual ideas are compelling and well-staged. i often find a great animated sequence can work as a film-within-a-film (or show) that is superior to the whole. maybe that's why i tend to prefer music videos and shorts

2. “Bathers” by Paul Cézanne. This huge painting seems to me like a puzzle awaiting a solution: the setting is outdoors, and those abstract nudes seem as solid & monumental as rocks or boulders. The forms & vibrant colours are compelling - but what does it all mean? Who knows..

using reference isn't "lazy." obviously don't copy someone else's work 1:1 - use your artistic expression and common sense - but most professional artists use reference and most employers expect you to use reference in order to create compelling work.
